Area Info
Stellenbosch is a town that is steeped in history and one which any visitor to the Western Cape should put at the very top of their travel itinerary. Taking a walk into central Stellenbosch along the famous Dorp Street is a window into the many cultures that have helped shape it's unique and splendorous aesthetic. Perhaps the easiest way to understand the depth of Stellenbosch's various influences can be seen in the architecture. Nestled shoulder-to-shoulder along the oak tree lined streets, you will find some of the most stunning examples of Georgian, modern Victorian and Dutch architecture in the Western Cape. Stellenbosch was founded in 1679 and is well known as South Africa's second oldest town. Simon van der Stel, who was the then governor of the Cape Colony, decided to name the area after himself. Stellenbosch translates as 'Stel's Bush'. There is just no denying the beautiful and richness of this stunning university town. It has a unique energy where the modern world moulds seamlessly with the rich heritage of the past. Stellenbosch is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated destinations in all of the Western Cape.
