Klerksdorp is a city located in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region of the North West Province, South Africa. This city was established in 1837 on the banks of the Schoonspruit River. Klerksdorp was founded by Voortrekkers and named after Jacob de Clerq. Many prospectors descended on Klerksdorp in 1886 after the discovery of gold in the area. Klerksdorp is also known as Klerksdorp (Matlosane).
Today this city’s economy is thriving thanks to its mining and agricultural industry. The city’s population is approximately 60 000 and the majority of speak Afrikaans. Klerksdorp is an important producer of maize, sorghum, groundnuts and sunflower.
