Area Info
Whether you're seeking luxury lodgings or more budget-friendly options, Colchester offers a variety of accommodations to suit any traveller visiting South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Located on the banks of the Sundays River, just a 20-minute drive from Port Elizabeth’s coastline, Colchester is nestled in an untouched part of the country, surrounded by ancient dunes estimated to be around 100,000 years old.
The town, named after the UK’s oldest town, has a rich history that its residents proudly celebrate. Around a century ago, Colchester attempted to rival Port Elizabeth as a port, with the vision of an engineer from Westminster who envisioned the town becoming the railway hub of the Eastern Cape.
The area's unique river dynamics made it an ideal location, and today, both locals and visitors embrace the natural beauty that surrounds them, with development only recently picking up due to a property boom. The dunes in the area are believed to be between 6,000 and 10,000 years old, sitting atop even older, compacted dunes that may date back up to 100,000 years.
These dunes are teeming with wildlife, from bushbuck and grysbok to smaller creatures like mice, meerkats, and mongooses. Birdwatchers often include Colchester in their itineraries, and river cruises on the Sundays River offer sightings of various wading birds, herons, ducks, Cape and masked weavers, and multiple types of kingfishers. The nearby Colchester salt pans are home to greater and lesser flamingos, African pied avocets, blue cranes, and other wading species. Swimming in the tidal pool is a favourite pastime, and the Addo Elephant Park is just a short distance away.
