Area Info
As with many of the little outlying towns out this way, Nigel began as a gold mining town in the late 1800s, named, not after anyone particularly famous but instead for a book the prospector, Sir Walter Scott, happened to be reading at the time they discovered gold here - The Fortunes of Nigel
Topographically located on the eastern edge of the Ekurhuleni Metro (formerly the East Rand). Nigel is less than 20 km from the Mpumalanga provincial border. We are only 45 minutes travel from OR Tambo International Airport and going to Egoli (Johannesburg, City of Gold), normally does not exceed an hour, depending on traffic density on the N3/M2. Our neighbouring town (15 km to the South) is steeped in history Heidelberg, the first capital of the Transvaal during the Anglo-Boer war (1880-81)
