Area Info
Buyskop itself is a site of immense historical interest. The outlaw Coenraad Buys lived here with his followers in the 1800's, withstanding sieges while all efforts to apprehend him failed. The Union Buildings in Pretoria were constructed with sandstone obtained from Buyskop. The old quarry is situated on Buyskop Lodge and can be visited. The nearby extremely popular holiday town of Bela-Bela and surroundings offers the visitor an immense variety and options of entertainment, right here in the bush.
Bela-Bela is a Sepedi (Northern Sotho) word meaning "water that boils on its own" or when literally translated, "boiling boiling" and refers to the town's world renowned hot water springs which were discovered in the early 1800's by the local Batswana tribes. The spring water flows strongly at 22 000 liters per hour and reaches a temperature of 52° Celsius. It is rich in minerals such as calcium carbonate and sodium chloride as well as other mineral salts that are beneficial to human ailments such as rheumatism.
Bela Bela is also the gateway to the Waterberg area, an unique fauna and flora heritage of unimaginable value for local tourism. The area is malaria free and while the summers are hot, the winters are mild.
