Area Info

Nieu-Bethesda (Dutch for New Bethesda) is a village in the Eastern Cape at the foot of the Sneeuberge, approximately 50 kilometres from Graaff Reinetand Middelburg. It was founded in 1875 as a church town, like many other Karoo villages, and attained municipal status in 1886. The name is of biblical origin (John 5:2-4) and means "place of flowing water" A natural spring and lei-water (furrow) system supply residents with crisp water, and provide the kind of soil perfect for roses, pear trees and weeping willows to thrive. It is a desert rose amongst the aloes of Graaff Reinet and Middleberg, each 50km away. Nieu Bethesda, however, is something quite special. Stuck in time, the town is a marvel. Here you will not find a tarred road, a petrol station or an ATM. What you will find is quirky residents, mysterious artists, donkeys, pear trees, and chats over coffee that last all day. You may find snow in the middle of summer, and you may find yourself never wanting to leave.

Big enough for 5, but cozy enough for 2. Insulated by original mud-brick walls, it's cozy in winter and cool in summer, with a little help from a fan and a fireplace. Beautiful old trees provide lots of shade in the garden and a big BBQ area.
