Hilton, a distinctly English country village 10 km from Pietermaritzburg at the start of the Midlands Meander, originated in 1857 with the purchase of a farm by Joseph Henderson. The town, cooler than Pietermaritzburg, attracts residents with its fresh air and Drakensberg views. Despite having over 10,000 residents, Hilton retains its village feel with tree-lined streets, Tudor-style architecture, and minimal traffic lights. It hosts five schools, including Hilton College, which is the venue for the Hilton Arts Festival in September. This festival features South African theatre, drama, comedy, music, cabaret, and an arts and crafts market.
