Area Info

The Khoi people called it "Aukoerebis", or place of Great Noise, as this powerful flow of water is unleashed from rocky surroundings characterised by the 18km abyss of the Orange River Gorge.
The semi-desert location may be arid but geologists and similar types are very interested in this area which teems with birdlife and small buck. Hardy plant life survives the arid conditions and the only relief is from the Orange / Gariep River.
