Area Info
Glenmore Beach, which is part of Munster, is the main spot for swimming and surfing, and this is often where confusion arises, leading the two to be used interchangeably. The beach is bordered by two rivers: the Mkhandandlovu River (meaning "head of the elephant") to the north and the Itongasi River (which translates to "I don’t know") to the south. These rivers divide the area into two parts—Glenmore Beach to the south and Munster to the north.
Although many people tend to group Munster and Glenmore Beach, there are subtle differences between the two. The four areas at the southern end of the Hibiscus Coast—Trafalgar Beach, Palm Beach, Munster, and Glenmore Beach—are situated close to one another, each with its unique charm.
The beauty of this coast is truly undeniable—with its long, unspoiled beaches, vibrant vegetation, wild seas crashing against boulders, and towering rocky outcrops. It's a haven for anglers and surfers and a popular location for events like beauty contests and fishing competitions.
Glenmore Beach is shark-protected, and the mouth of the Itongasi River serves as a popular boat launch spot. Surfers flock to this area, making it their local favourite. It’s a fantastic destination year-round, especially from April to October, when Bottle Nose and common dolphins, along with Humpback and Southern Right Whales, are often spotted in the waters. The annual Sardine Run, which reached Glenmore Bay in 2000 and 2001, draws large schools of dolphins, an awe-inspiring sight that’s not to be missed.
