Area Info

Swellendam, which has 17,537 residents and is located in the Western Cape province, is the fifth-oldest town in South Africa (after Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Simon's Town, and Paarl). There are more than 50 provincial heritage assets in the town, the majority of them are structures of Cape Dutch design. Swellendam is situated on the N2 highway, roughly 220 miles from both Cape Town and George.

Nestled in nature’s beauty, Swellendam lies in the foothills of the Langeberg, (Long Mountains). The town was named after the 1st Dutch governor born on South African soil, one Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife, Helena ten Damme. When you look at the mountain, take note of “12uur kop” (twelve o’clock peak), 1426 m high. The old people thought that at midday the sun was directly above it.
