The charming Butterworth, also branded as Gcuwa, is one of the oldest towns on Eastern Cape's wild coast situated on the N2 National Road. It is located about 110km from East London. Butterworth provides visitors with an opportunity to enjoy a bona fide South African taste mingled with traditional Xhosa hospitality. Gcuwa Dam is about 2km from Butterworth Town.

There are two sites in Butterworth which are worth a visit; namely the Gcuwa Falls and the Bowa Falls. The Bowa Falls has an impressive 100 m drop.
