Area Info
Better known as Louis Trichardt, Makhado is a charming town located near the famous Kruger National Park, one of South Africa's premier tourist destinations. Situated at the foot of the lush Soutpansberg mountain range, the area is renowned for its diverse and fertile landscape, producing litchis, bananas, mangoes, nuts, tea, and coffee. The rugged terrain is home to iconic features such as the giant baobab tree and the indigo-coloured mountains that dominate the horizon.
Louis Trichardt is a typical 'boere' town—small, picturesque, and vibrant—often frequented by travellers en route to Kruger National Park. The town’s strategic location along the N1 national road makes it a key commercial, industrial, and residential hub in this northern region of South Africa, earning it the title of the 'gateway to Africa.'
The town, originally named Louis Trichardt, was briefly renamed Makhado in 2003 in honour of a Venda king who ruled the area in the late 19th century. However, after much controversy, the name was reverted to its original form, Louis Trichardt, following a court ruling. Despite its historical significance, the name change remains a topic of debate in the region.
