Area Info
Van Reenen's Pass, a sweeping and often treacherous route through the Drakensberg Mountains, is renowned for its slippery roads, frequent misty conditions, and breathtaking views. Connecting Johannesburg and Durban, Van Reenen is a small town perched at the summit of the pass between Harrismith and Ladysmith on the N3.
Steeped in Anglo-Boer War history, the town features Windy Corner, a scenic lookout point with panoramic mountain views, and the Llandaff Oratory, a tiny chapel with only eight seats, believed to be the smallest Roman Catholic church in the world.
Despite its rich history and stunning surroundings, Van Reenen is often just a stopover for travellers refuelling at the halfway mark, where the crisp mountain air, damp morning mist, and the scent of petrol mingle with the taste of bitter coffee and a soggy toasted sandwich—creating a nostalgic pause on the journey between two major cities.
