Plettenberg Bay boasts a long history, with Portuguese explorers frequently visiting the area during the 15th and 16th centuries. Evidence of their presence can still be found today, including artefacts such as the remains of the Gonzales wreck. European settlers arrived in the late 1700s, leaving behind a wealth of historical relics, including the Old Rectory (built in 1776 by the Dutch East India Trading Company) and Forest Hall, a stately home built in 1864 by William Henry Newdgate.
