Area Info

Jozini, a small town in northeastern KwaZulu-Natal along the main road to Mozambique, is a key access point to the wonders surrounding the Jozini Dam, also known as Pongolapoort Dam. This vast dam on the Pongola River not only provides a dramatic entry into Maputaland, but also supports abundant wildlife, including fish, hippos, and crocodiles, making it a fascinating destination.

Located on the Elephant Coast between the majestic Ubombo and Lebombo mountains and covering over 16,000 hectares, Lake Jozini (as the dam is now often called) is rapidly gaining popularity as a tiger fishing hotspot. Its proximity to the Pongola Nature Reserve and Game Reserve allows for unique wildlife viewing from boats, enhanced by the enchanting glowflies that illuminate the shoreline at night.

The return of elephants is a major attraction, complementing the presence of numerous other game species like buffalo, giraffe, and zebra, as well as predators. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the over 350 species inhabiting the dam's wetlands.
