Area Info

Jozini, a small town in the northeastern part of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, lies along the main route to Mozambique and is closely linked to the Jozini (or Pongolapoort) Dam. This expansive dam, located on the Pongola River, serves as a dramatic gateway into Maputaland, supporting a diverse ecosystem with an abundance of fish, hippos, crocodiles, and local communities. Nestled between the majestic Ubombo and Lebombo mountains on the Elephant Coast, the dam spans over 16,000 hectares.

The primary draw of this area is the return of the elephant, but there is also an impressive variety of other wildlife to be seen, including buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, kudu, bushbuck, duiker, steenbok, hyena, cheetah, wild dog, serval cat, warthog, and even the rare sighting of a leopard, which roams the Lebombo mountains.

Originally designed to irrigate more than 80,000 hectares of farmland, the dam has supported the cultivation of crops like sugarcane, rice, coffee, and various subtropical fruits. Often compared to Zimbabwe's Lake Kariba, the Jozini Dam is quickly becoming a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts. As farmers are rewilding large areas of land surrounding the dam, there is a growing effort to restore the region to its former wildlife-rich state, transforming it into a haven for game seekers.
