The malaria-free region boasts several nature reserves. The Pilanesburg National Park lies right outside Rustenburg, in a vast crater of an extinct volcano in the Pilanesberg Mountain Range. It is the 4th largest national park in South Africa and offers exceptional Big 5 game viewing, hiking trails, and exciting hunting trips.

The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve (or Rustenburg Nature Reserve) is home to more than 115 species of plant and 230 species of bird, with a Cape griffon breeding colony situated to the east of the reserve. A variety of antelope and small mammals can be spotted, and although predators are seldom seen, there are leopard, caracal, brown hyena, and black-backed jackal on the reserve. A variety of hiking trails can be taken, such as the 19.5km Baviaanskrans Route, which includes the Waterfall View and the Garden of Remembrance, and the 25.3km Summit Route where you can swim in natural pools. Less fit hikers can do the 2km Vlei Ramble to enjoy bird watching from a viewing hut.
