Heidelberg is nestled between the Langeberg Mountains and the Indian Ocean along the Duivenhoks River in the Western Cape. The Doornboom Homestead was built in 1728. The town was established in 1855 around the majestic Dutch Reformed Church. Go on a Historical Walking Route to view historical landmarks. In the area are many trails and day drives for nature lovers. Nearby are the World Heritage sites of Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve and Boosmansbos Wilderness Area. Grootvadersbosch has various mountain bike trails. Day drives to Tradouw and Garcia Pass are recommended. The Bontebok National Park and Heidelberg Bird Route are excellent for bird lovers. The coastal town of Witsand, about 40km away, is a well known whale watching site. The pont across the Breede River at Malgas is not to be missed.
