Area Info
The town is known for the massive open-cast iron ore mine - one of the five largest in the world. Situated in an incredible forest of camelthorn trees, one of only two such forests in the world. This forest spans 4,000 hectares, forming a reserve that has been designated a Natural Heritage Site.
Located in the heart of the Kalahari Desert, Kathu is a mining town strategically situated along the N14 between Kuruman and Upington, with access by road, rail, and air. Originally founded in 1973 to house workers for the nearby mine.
The name "Kathu" means "town under the trees," and sits in the middle of the camel thorn forest. This protected forest, mostly on private land, relies on the goodwill of local residents and visitors to help preserve these iconic trees.
Another reason to visit Kathu is it's stunning golf course, which lies partly within the camel thorn forest on the desert's edge. Rated among the top 20 golf courses in South Africa, the 18-hole course hosts the annual Kalahari Classic and serves as the second stop of the winter leg of the Vodacom Southern African Tour.
