Area Info

Nestled in one of the world’s most stunning wine valleys, Franschhoek, the "French corner of the Cape," is just a 45-minute drive from Cape Town and within half an hour of the Stellenbosch, Paarl, Wellington, and Somerset West wine routes.

This charming, historically French town is often regarded as the food and wine capital of South Africa, and it’s hard to argue with that reputation. Franschhoek is home to eight of the country’s top 100 restaurants, nearly 30 wine estates, and more than 28 restaurants offering exceptional dining experiences.

Recently, the Franschhoek Valley launched a Cap Classique route, featuring nine nearby cellars within 4 km, as part of a collaborative marketing effort. The sparkling wine tour offers visitors insight into the process of making Cap Classique, enhancing the overall wine experience.

Once called the Valley of the Huguenots, the area was granted to French Huguenot refugees in the 17th century after they fled France following the outlawing of Protestantism. Today, many of the wine estates still carry their original French names, and the farms are adorned with beautiful Cape Dutch architecture.
