Area Info

Ufumene measures 4000 hectares (9884 acres). It straddles both sides of a valley in the mountains that separate the coastal plains of the Eastern Cape from the arid Karoo. Its flood plains are 300 m above sea level, the high plateaus rise to 500m.

It features 5 different biomes for you to explore, succulent karoo, broken thorn veld, subtropical savanna, rhino bush and valley thicket.

The Bushmans River winds through Ufumene for 12 kms. It flows after big rains, but its pools are kept full with water seeping down from the hills. Along its banks it sustains a mature forest of acacia, bush willow, jacket plum and paperbark trees.

You will find most indigenous species of animals on the ranch with the exception of dangerous game. (If you want to experience the "Big 5" animals, we can arrange for a trip to the nearby Addo National Elephant Park, home to elephants, rhino, buffalo, lions and leopards.)

Wild animals on the farm range from the tiny field mouse to the graceful giraffe.

The farm is also home to rare indigenous birds, like the proud secretary bird and the blue crane, South Africa's national bird. It also serves as a stopover for migratory storks from Europe.

We manage the species that significantly impact the farm's limited fodder resources. This includes antelope species, zebra, giraffe and warthogs.

Antelopes currently on the farm are: duiker, steenbuck, springbuck, impala, mountain reedbuck, common reedbuck bushbuck, blesbuck, lechwe, red hartebeest, blue, golden and black wildebeest, waterbuck, sable, nyala, gemsbuck, kudu and eland.
