Area Info

The town of Kirkwood is situated in the heart of the Sundays River Valley and can be considered the citrus capital of the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The Greater Addo area offers many tourist attractions, including the Addo Elephant Park and Daniell Cheetah Project.

Kirkwood boasts a fine lookout point with wide vistas over the valley. During the picking season (April to Sept), tractors with trailers brimming with oranges rumble into town and the local co-op literally seethes with activity.

Activities in Kirwood include a 9 hole golf course. A pitted gravel road leads to this pastoral village where sacraments are still given in the church with its yellowwood rafters, teak window frames and brass hanging lamps.

The Lookout is also well known as a site where large dinosaur fossils are frequently dug up by archaeologists. The first complete dinosaur fossil to be found in South Africa was found not far from Kirkwood and aptly named Kirky, because it looked like a turkey.

Kirkwood is also host to the Wildsfees (Wildlife Festival) held annually towards the end of June.
