Trafalgar, a tranquil village on KwaZulu-Natal’s South Coast, lies just south of San Lameer and north of Palm Beach, 150 km from Durban. Named by the missionary relatives of Viscount Horatio Nelson after the 1805 battle, the town itself is anything but warlike, offering unspoiled subtropical beauty, grassy verges, and a serene two-kilometre beach.
Unlike the bustling nearby Margate, Trafalgar remains peaceful, yet its beaches are protected by shark nets and are popular among surfers and snorkelers. Just offshore, 90-million-year-old fossil beds add a unique attraction, while the Trafalgar Marine Reserve, extending six kilometres along the coast and 500 metres out to sea, preserves diverse forest types, dune vegetation, and grasslands.
Plans to incorporate this into the Pondoland Marine Protected Area further highlight its ecological importance. The village has a small shop and café, while a short walk to San Lameer offers beachside dining, and a 15-minute drive leads to the amenities of Ramsgate and Margate.
